I chose the apartheid in South Africa as my topic; this is an act of segregation against blacks started by white, British and Dutch people. Personally, this was chosen because I am really into human rights, particularly human rights focusing on discrimination, racism, or acts of prejudice. Also, the topic needed to have a lot of interesting events inside of it in order to remain exciting and captivate other viewers' and/or readers' minds.
When researching my project, I first looked for websites that would simply give an overview of what exactly the apartheid in South Africa was about. After looking aimlessly on websites I came across one that gave me a good outlook on how the apartheid affected everyone in South Africa. It was a non-biased site and so I began to look at other websites similar to this one. The next day I went to the library and checked out autobiographies as well as history books on my topic. I assumed there wouldn’t be many, but surprisingly there was. I also began to search newspaper articles seeing as they are key primary resources. The primary sources used were very helpful in actually describing other peoples’ feelings. The secondary sources were good as well, they helped to really get a feel of my topic and how it was affecting everyone involved.
I have decided to create a website for my National History Day project; the previous year, I also made a website and it took a lot of hard work and time. It is my belief that websites are more competitive and I was looking for a bit of a challenge, which has caused me to choose creating a website over any of the other project type choices. The first step was to create an outline illustrating the key events of the apartheid in South Africa. Next, I typed up a draft and chose the pictures I was going to use and spent multiple days editing it. Lastly, the website was finalized and fully spellchecked to be sure it was as perfect as can be.
At first, my heart was set on the topic of sex trafficking in Africa, however I came to the realization that all information accessed was written on events happening in the last 10 years; not far enough in history. When I came across the apartheid in South Africa it had many key events within it and was an excellent model of “Turning Points in History.” It shows how whites slowly began migrating to South Africa and taking over the African residents resources. Also, South Africa became overran by British people who turned violent towards the native residents. The African people prayed for a different life and not until around 1990 did the segregation actually completely come to an end. The apartheid in South Africa takes you along a timeline of events leading to its end.
